  5.  This document contains general information about
  6.   the HP DeskScan II application but primarily
  7.   it documents issues discovered or resolved after
  8.   the documentation was printed.

  27.  Changes to AUTOEXEC.BAT, CONFIG.SYS, and SYSTEM.INI 
  28.  
  29.   1) Adds the directory where DeskScan II is installed
  30.    to the PATH statement in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
  31.    For example:
  32.  
  33.     PATH=C:\DOS;C:\DESKSCAN;
  34.  
  35.   2) Adds drivers to the CONFIG.SYS file. If you are
  36.    installing the HP SCSI card it adds:
  37.     
  38.     DEVICE=C:\DESKSCAN\MINI400I.SYS
  39.     DEVICE=C:\DESKSCAN\SJIIX.SYS
  40.  
  41.   If you want to use a SCSI card (ASPI or CAM)
  42.   that is already installed in you computer
  43.   the DeskScan installer adds only:
  44.  
  45.     DEVICE=C:\DESKSCAN\SJIIX.SYS
  46.  
  47.  3) Adds the following statements to the SYSTEM.INI file
  48.   (under the [386Enh] section) if you are running
  49.   WINDOWS 3.1:
  50.  
  51.     device=C:\DESKSCAN\WIN400I.386
  52.     device=C:\DESKSCAN\HPSCANR.386
  53.  
  54.  4) Copies the following files to the backup 
  55.  reference diskette:
  56.  
  57.     MCA     @631F.ADF
  58.     EISA    !HWP2080.CFG
  59.

  61. Installer problems
  62.  
  63. If you add a new Program Manager Group for DeskScan,
  64.  do not use parenthesis or square brackets as part
  65.  of the name for the group.

  68.  Windows NT Support
  69.  
  70. DeskScan II version 2.0 is not currently supported
  71.  under Windows NT. Please call HP's Automated 
  72.  Support Access Program at 1-800-333-1917
  73.  (or 1-208-344-4809), or your local support 
  74.  provider for the most current information.

  84. DeskScan II version 2.0 is not currently supported

  95. Removing DeskScan II from your computer
  96.  
  97. Read UNINSTAL.TXT in the \DESKSCAN directory to find
  98.  all the changes to your system files caused by 
  99.  installing the DeskScan II program.

  102. To install with Norton Desktop
  103.  
  104. If you are running MicroSoft Windows using Norton
  105.  as the shell, you must change the shell to PROGMAN.EXE
  106.  before installing the DeskScan software.
  107.  
  108. How to change the shell:
  109.  
  110.    - Run Windows NOTEPAD and open the SYSTEM.INI file
  111.      which is in the \WINDOWS directory.
  112.     - In the [boot] section you will find a line that reads
  113.        shell=ndw.exe
  114.     - Make a copy of this line and insert a ";" [semicolon] 
  115.     as the first character in the first copy.
  116.     - Change the second copy to read:
  117.         shell=progman.exe
  118.     - Restart Windows

  120. To upgrade from an earlier version of DeskScan 
  121.  
  122. The DeskScan II, version 2.0, installer automatically
  123.  upgrades earlier versions of DeskScan software. 
  124.  
  125. Version 2.0 includes an HP ScanJet driver for ASPI and
  126.  CAM SCSI cards. You can use the drivers only with the
  127.  HP ScanJet IIc, IIcx, or IIp scanners. 
  128.  
  129. If you already have an ASPI or CAM SCSI card,
  130.  the new drivers provide the advantages of using 
  131.  one less interface card slot and using less 
  132.  expansion ROM memory space.
  133.  
  134. When you upgrade to version 2.0, the existing
  135.  DESKSCAN.INI file is saved as DESKSCAN.BAK.
  136.  If you have calibrated print paths that you 
  137.  want to save from the previous version of DeskScan,
  138.  you can recover them from the DESKSCAN.BAK file.

  140. Controlling the I/O space reserved for SJIIX.SYS
  141.  
  142. The HP ScanJet IIcx uses a new SCSI interface card
  143.  that automatically re-configures itself when another
  144.  adapter card is put in the system. The IIcx card uses
  145.  one on the following I/O spaces for data transfer:
  146.  
  147.               280     330
  148.               290     340
  149.               300     348
  150.               310     350
  151.  
  152. If you want to choose the I/O space MINI400I.SYS uses,
  153. add the following command line option:
  154.  
  155.    DEVICE=C:\DESKSCAN\MINI400I.SYS /SETADDR=<I/O space>
  156.  
  157. Where <I/O space> is one the above mentioned spaces.

  160. Scaling images scanned with a transparency adapter
  161.  
  162. The HP ScanJet IIcx scanner supports scanning from a
  163.  transparency adapter. 
  164.  
  165. Under some circumstances while scaling an image
  166.  minor defects common to all CCD scanners may become
  167.  more noticeable.
  168.  
  169. If you are confronted with this problem, scan the image
  170.  at 50, 100, 150, 200, 300, 400, 600, or 800 dpi. Then,
  171.  transform the image to the desired resolution by "resampling"
  172.  the image with an image editor, such as Aldus PhotoStyler
  173.  or Adobe PhotoShop.
